Interiors UK 2014

When I checked my e-mails this afternoon there was one from WAN's News and it was about the Interiors UK 2014! Which is:

The UK’s definitive Interiors event for furniture, lifestyle & design

This time it will be in Birmingham from the 19-22nd of January and I so want to go. Four days of design, furniture, lighting, elegance and inspiration, sounds absolutely perfect to me!

All this and more will be at the Interiors UK 2014. 450 exhibitors from all over the UK plus, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, France, Portugal and many many more. 

Now I just have to check my schedule for next term and see if I can get this booked in.

Topology exhibition

What: Fourth exhibition of the TOPOI series : Topology

Who: Students of ASN

This week we only had 4 days to prepare our show so it was probably not as good as it could have been, but we managed to pull something together and the topic of TOPOLOGY was explored through sounds, images, sculptures, paper-cuts, projections and videos. 

My piece this week was a projection of architecture around the world. It was a slideshow with images of different architecture that was edited to only consist of the geometrical shapes, so blurred down and pixelated. The title was "Topological view" and the description was: "Architecture of the world, seen through topology eyes" At first I only projected one image with all the smaller images on it, but then my tutor suggested it would make a more interesting impact if I made it into a slideshow, so I changed it right before the opening and it was definitely more interesting that way.

Perceptual Disconnection

Too bad this was only a one night thing, but the exhibition was very well put together and nicely presented. Well done guys!

Nr. 3 - UTOPIA

The third exhibition in our TOPOI series
Topic: Utopia?
Where: Tent Gallery + ASN Studio space
When: Thursday 14th of November
Who: The students of Art, Space and Nature

This thursday it was time for another exhibition and this time we were exploring the topic of UTOPIA. So what is utopia you ask? That is very individual and depends on the person who answers. However this is the explanation in the dictionary:

Utopia |juːˈtəʊpɪə|nounan imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The word was first used in the book Utopia (1516) by Sir Thomas More. The opposite of dystopia.ORIGIN based on Greek ou ‘not’ + topos ‘place’.and Wikipedia says this: A utopia /juːˈtoʊpiə/ is a community or society possessing highly desirable or perfect qualities. The word was coined in Greek by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempt to create an ideal society, and imagined societies portrayed in fiction. It has spawned other concepts, most prominently dystopia.
There you have the general explanation, now it was up to us to try and show our thoughts about it and create a show. This is the plan for this weeks show and as you can see there are a lot of different things going on here. We had projections of boxes in the landscape, sculpture of a tombstone, photographs, a video showing all of us talking about our idea of utopia, a whole wall full of writings about it in different languages, flowers, colors, memories and a table full of cupcakes and pink drinks.

My piece for this show was the catering part which I decided to make into a "pretty" table of "pretty" food. The idea was that Utopia is supposed to be this "perfect" place and I think pretty, tasty and colourful things fit into that, so I decided to make a lot of cupcakes, have flower decorations, candles, tea, pink drink and beer. This was also meant to be a little sarcastic in a way, we tried to create a bit of  a "suburban home" where everything seems to be perfect, but really this is probably something we will never achieve.

Ironically this show was a bit of a pain to arrange, but we got there in the end and I think we were all quite happy with the result once again.

UTOPIA?

This thursday it is time for another one of ASN's events, this time the theme is UTOPIA?

We will share our thoughts and ideas around this topic. Expect our version of a "good place"

Clues: yummy and decorative cakes, writings, colors, flowers, something bubbly and a happy atmosphere!

First review

What: Orkney Island Reviews

Who: The students of Art, Space and Nature

Last week it was time for our first review in our gallery and we filled it up with all the materials we gathered at our field trip to Orkney. The walls were filled with pictures, drawings, sketches and notes, there was shells, stones, glass, wool, fishing equipment, some wood and other small bits from the island. We watched some videos, listened to some recordings and followed some interesting slideshows. It was really quite interesting to see what people had found and what they have been researching, I think there should be some pretty intriguing projects emerging from this and some well made works going back up to the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness in February. I presented my pinhole camera and the photos, some drawings, a few maps, some images from Stromness and a slideshow of all the photos I took with my digital camera. It was nice to show what I've gathered and get some feedback on it from my colleagues and tutors. I think I have a better idea of where I am going with this source materials now. Here are some photos from the preparation of the review and my final presentation.

I started off with the idea of looking at lights and shadows on the island, how it moves and reacts on the landscape. With the help from my pinhole camera I now have some really interesting photographs to work with. Pavilions, installations, facades, adaptable architecture, dematerialization and atmosphere are some of the things I am looking at for inspiration. Hopefully this will help me develop an interesting design project for Stromness. Time will show...

DYSTOPIA

The Students of Art, Space and Nature presented
"Dystopia"
Exhibition in TENT Gallery
Thursday 31st of October (aka. Halloween)

This was part of our Topoi exhibition series and this event focused on the topic that is Dystopia. We all had an idea that Dystopia is about people loosing their humanity, personality and "colour", so the exhibition which included films, audio, pictures, sculptures, installations and a performance was focused around this "dehumanization" in a way. It fell conveniently on the night of Halloween so we wanted to create an event that would suit this as well, but without being a typical pumpkin and ghost thing. We managed to create an event that was both intriguing and disturbing, representing our impression of a dystopia. 

This is the film Diandra, Akshaya and I made for the show called "In Course of Time".

Exploring the topic of Dystopia and showing how human beings might all end up the same in the future because technology will be taking over.

The event was pretty successful, quite a lot of people showed up and they were all positive about the event so that is great news for us. We did put down quite a lot of work for this event so getting good feedback is always great.
